QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Laser tattoo removal uses controlled pulses of light to break down unwanted tattoo ink within the skin. The fragmented pigment is then gradually processed by the body’s natural clearance systems over the weeks between sessions.
At ONYX & NOIR in Weybridge, treatment begins with an individual assessment of the tattoo, ink colours, skin type and your goals — whether fading, partial lightening or working towards as much clearance as is realistically achievable.
Specialist laser energy is absorbed by tattoo pigment particles. That energy breaks the ink into smaller fragments. Between appointments, the body continues to clear those fragments, so fading develops progressively rather than all at once.
Settings and approach are tailored to the tattoo’s size, location, colours and depth after consultation, rather than applied as a generic protocol.
Darker inks — particularly black and deep greys — often respond more readily because they absorb laser energy efficiently. Some brighter colours, including certain greens, blues and yellows, can be more stubborn and may need more sessions or leave a softer residual tone.
Ink type, how the tattoo was applied and where it sits on the body also influence clearance. We assess your specific tattoo in consultation and set expectations honestly.
Most tattoos require a course of multiple sessions. The number varies with ink colour, density, depth, age of the tattoo, skin type, location on the body and how your skin responds after each treatment.
We do not publish a fixed session count for every tattoo. After seeing the work, we can outline a personalised plan and review progress as treatment continues.
Sessions are spaced to allow the skin to settle and the body time to clear fragmented ink. The appropriate interval is confirmed at consultation and may be adjusted as your response becomes clearer.
Adequate spacing supports safer healing and more consistent fading. Rushing appointments rarely improves the end result.
Sensation is often described as a quick snapping or warm prickling feeling over the tattoo. Comfort varies with tattoo size, location, ink density and individual sensitivity.
We treat carefully and explain what to expect before we begin. If you are concerned about sensation, raise this at consultation so comfort options can be discussed.
Temporary redness, warmth and swelling are common after a session. Some clients notice blistering, scabbing or sensitivity as the area heals. These responses usually settle with proper aftercare, though every skin reacts differently.
You will receive clear guidance on covering the area, washing, exercise and sun exposure. Follow those instructions closely to support healing.
Aftercare protects the treated skin while ink clearance continues. Keep the area clean as advised, avoid picking at any blistering or flaking skin, and follow guidance on moisturising, dressings, heat and sun.
Avoid unnecessary irritation, swimming and heavy sweating until you are cleared to resume them. If healing looks unexpected, contact the studio for advice rather than applying unapproved products.
When treatment is appropriate and aftercare is followed, scarring is uncommon. Temporary surface healing responses can occur. Rarely, longer-term texture or pigment changes may be seen, which is why suitability assessment matters.
Please tell us about previous scarring, keloid tendency or skin conditions during consultation so we can treat with appropriate caution.
Many adults with unwanted tattoos are candidates, but suitability depends on your skin, medical history, the tattoo itself and your goals. Recent strong sun or tan on the area, active infection, pregnancy, and certain medications or conditions may mean treatment should wait.
A consultation and suitability assessment determine whether laser is appropriate and what results are realistic for your tattoo.
Session length depends on the size and complexity of the tattoo. Smaller pieces are quicker; larger or multi-coloured work takes longer. Timing is confirmed when your treatment plan is agreed.
Please allow extra time at the studio for preparation, aftercare explanation and any questions.
Some lightening may appear as the skin settles after a session, but meaningful fading usually develops over the following weeks as the body clears fragmented ink. Progress is gradual across a course of treatments.
We review results between sessions and adjust the plan where needed. Patience between appointments is part of a successful outcome.
Significant fading is achievable for many tattoos, and some can clear very thoroughly. Complete 100% removal cannot be guaranteed. Residual shadow, resistant colours or very dense ink may remain even after a full course.
Your consultation is the place to set a realistic goal — full clearance where plausible, or substantial fading if that is the more honest expectation.
Both use laser energy to break down pigment, but tattoos and scalp micropigmentation differ in ink type, depth, density and placement. Body tattoos are assessed as tattoos; SMP removal is planned specifically for scalp micropigmentation.
ONYX & NOIR offers both services. If your concern is unwanted SMP rather than a conventional tattoo, ask for SMP laser removal so the approach matches that pigment.
Start with a consultation so we can assess the tattoo, discuss likely outcomes and provide a personalised quote. Pricing is not listed as a fixed package for every design, because size, colours and complexity vary.
